The Issue

UPDATE 2 (12/16/2024): We've just received confirmation that a French class will be offered this year for 7th graders who didn't have the chance to take French (as French 1AB). Thank you all for the support on this petition—the next step is to sign up for French!

UPDATE 1: We've heard that French 1A will be available on the course selection form. However, it is still unclear if next year's incoming 8th graders will be offered a French 1 class to start their progression.

The course selection form is used to gauge interest; if there aren't enough sign-ups, the class will not be offered. Please keep spreading the word and sharing with friends to ensure that the French program gets the support it needs!

At the start of the school year, Miller Middle School decided not to offer French 1A (an introductory French course for 7th graders) despite sign-ups. This decision inherently has and will disrupt the regular progression of French language learners and endanger or permanently damage the vitality of both Miller and Lynbrook High School French programs. This entire process has not only disappointed Miller’s many eager students who had hoped to take the class, but also the entire Lynbrook community of students taking French.

The loss of the French program at Miller would signal not only the loss of the option for future students to learn the French language at Miller and Lynbrook, but also the development of cultural competency and appreciation for Francophone (French-speaking) regions around the world. French is spoken on all 5 continents, and offers students endless connections to other subjects like literature, history, and the arts, as well as opportunities to gain an edge in business and science career fields.  Learning French connects students to global opportunities, especially in tech, where French is valuable for international collaboration. With French-speaking markets influencing AI, design, and innovation, fluency bridges culture and business, enriching both personal and professional growth. Read more here: Why study French

As a result, it is crucial that we immediately take action to protect the irreplaceable experiences, opportunities, and joys that come with being part of the French program at Miller and Lynbrook. We are asking that Miller reconsider their decision and take action to reinstate the French 1A course and provide an opportunity to this year’s would-be French 1A students to learn French 1 over one year, starting in the 2025-2026 school year.

Join us in our demand to uphold the importance of linguistic and cultural diversity by signing this petition. Together, we can ensure that future generations will continue to enjoy the flourishing and vibrant French community at Miller and Lynbrook.

Supported by Lynbrook High School's French students.
