Petition updateSave Mexico's Vaquita Porpoise from Imminent Extinction!Vaquita Porpoise Could Go Extinct This Year

Illegal fishing for the totoaba, a large species of fish, continues in Mexico's Sea of Cortez as the vaquita is driven ever closer to extinction. Vaquita entangled in gillnets set for totoaba have no chance of survival and drown within minutes. This illegal fishery has driven the vaquita population from 250 individuals in 2008 to fewer than 20 in 2018.
A single totoaba swim bladder is now reportedly worth US$ 250,000 on the black market in Asia, and criminal cartels are undeterred by Mexico's enforcement efforts designed to stop them. With so few animals left, the vaquita could be extinct by the end of the year.
We must send the strongest message to the Mexican government: This illegal fishery must be stopped, and that must happen immediately.
