As a returned veteran and a member of the local community for the last 20 years, I cannot stand by as the Mentone RSL teeters on the brink of closure, largely due to inaction and misinformation from RSL Victoria. This cherished institution opened its doors to me and countless others, providing a haven and a strong support network just when it was needed most. It is more than just a building; it is the heart and soul of our community.

Mentone RSL has always been a sanctuary, a place where veterans and their families come together to find solace, understanding, and camaraderie without the need for explanations. For many, it has been a lifeline, offering help and welfare services in their times of need. It stands as a monument of gratitude and remembrance for those who sacrificed so much for our country.

Since the closure of Mentone RSL on 5 November 2025, there has been a conspicuous void in our community. The absence of this vital institution has left veterans without the support network they desperately need. This closure not only affects veterans and their families but also diminishes the community's spirit, as the RSL has been a gathering place for events, communal engagements, and ceremonies that forge deep community ties.

The misinformation that has shrouded the circumstances of this closure must be addressed. Mentone RSL is committed to maintaining support and well-being for those who have served. Concerns of financial mismanagement and governance issues need to be investigated so as not to tarnish the RSL's legacy and the trust placed in it by veterans and residents alike.

We propose that the current committee oversee the re-opening of the Mentone RSL to allow them to implement a clear governance structure so as to not let financial mismanagement happen again. This will ensure that the RSL can continue to fulfill its fundamental role as a cornerstone of support and unity for veterans and the community.
