Hello!
We from MASA would like to thank you so much for all your support over the years.
The Health Minister and other government representatives in Malaysia are now considering to decriminalize the use of all drugs. What does that mean? Basically, anyone who is caught with a small amount of drugs (measurable) will be considered a user and patient instead of a criminal.
The Sale and distribution of drugs are still illegal though, and anyone caught with drugs more than the allowed limit would be considered a "pusher" and punished. Some may even be sentenced to life imprisonment. However, this is a hug leap forward compared to the draconian laws which permitted the hanging of people.
Although the idea of decriminalization may seem like the government is permitting the use of drugs, it really isn't. So long as the people who use them are incarcerated, there is no hope for them to recover or turn over a new leaf. Literally though, in Malaysia over 80% of all drug users take opioids which are deadly while only 4% use cannabis! It is much healthier and safer if these people were introduced to cannabis.
Don't get us wrong however. We are not changing one addiction to another, but instead offering a safer way for people to manage pain and enjoy the numb feeling similar to opioids in a natural way. There are numerous studies which proof that cannabis is not addictive. Take for instance the situation in Malaysia today. When cannabis was legalized in Thailand, almost all illegal farmers are now becoming licensed growers and have stopped exporting cannabis to Malaysia. What happened to the users here?
Well, nothing actually. Almost all of them are living their day to day lives with no withdrawal effects that can be observed for opioids and other harmful drugs. Then again, what if addiction is no more a problem? Well, many agencies like the National Anti-Drug Agency (NADA) will not have anyone to catch and keep up their SOP. But seriously, the War on Drugs has caused the loss of thousands of lives in this country and have led to only an increased use of drugs!
This is why NADA is against the idea of decriminalization. Furthermore, when cannabis and other drugs are "legalized", all drugs will be available in licensed clinics and pharmaceuticals where doctors and healthcare professionals can monitor and prescribe patients with high-quality grade drugs. Then the "black market" will slowly disappear and the "addiction" epidemic can be stopped as well. What do you think? Please share this Petition on your social medias for us to increase our numbers. With more Malaysians showing support, we could create a remarkable CHANGE and build a beautiful future for our children!
