The Issue

Majuli is more than just a river island. It is a living symbol of Assam's history, culture, traditions, and identity. For centuries, it has preserved the teachings of the Satras, nurtured art, music, literature, and spirituality, and stood as a proud testament to the rich heritage of our people.

Today, Majuli faces a grave challenge. Year after year, river-bank erosion continues to consume its land. From 1250 square kilometres in the 1700s to just about 400 square kilometres today.

Every metre lost to the Brahmaputra is not merely soil washed away by the river—it is a piece of our history, our memories, and our cultural legacy disappearing forever.

As students, citizens, and lovers of Assam, we respectfully urge the Government of Assam and all relevant authorities to strengthen efforts to protect Majuli through modern scientific technologies, planting deep-rooted trees like Kanchan along vulnerable riverbanks, using geotextile mats, and constructing permeable bamboo or RCC screens to slow down the Brahmaputra's currents, long-term erosion-control measures, advanced monitoring systems, and sustainable environmental planning.

The preservation of Majuli is not only an environmental responsibility but also a cultural and historical duty. Future generations deserve the opportunity to experience the traditions, stories, heritage, and way of life that Majuli has safeguarded for centuries.

If Majuli is lost, Assam will lose far more than land. We will lose a part of our identity, a part of our history, and a part of our soul. Protecting Majuli means protecting the living heartbeat of Assamese culture. It preserves our heritage, our history, and our art forms. It is a large cultural hub of the vaishnavite dharma started by srimanta sankardev.

We therefore call upon all concerned citizens, students, educators, artists, environmentalists, and policymakers to unite in support of stronger action for the protection of Majuli.

Let us act today so that future generations may inherit the Majuli we cherish, rather than remember it only through photographs and stories.

Save Majuli. Protect Assam's heritage. Preserve our future.
