Save London's nightlife. Stop the closure of fabric.

The Issue

Sign my petition to show your support for fabric. On the 6th of September, fabric could be closed forever when their licence is reviewed by Islington Borough Council.

I’ve been working with fabric for the last 8 years as a promoter and resident DJ of the Sunday night party at fabric WetYourSelf! Like all of you, I’ve been welcomed as part of the fabric family since I first walked through their doors, so this is an issue that’s very close to my heart.

You probably saw the story about the elderly Polish couple who came to the club and stayed until 5am in the morning. It became one of the most talked about stories that week, not only in the UK but across the globe with three million people reading Washington Post website alone [you can read it here if you missed it. https://goo.gl/h6rEck

The reason why I’ve brought up this story is because it shows something about us, the clubbing community, about the culture behind it and how fabric operates – that no matter how old you are, rich or poor, colour or gender, you are welcome in the club and you will be looked after. It’s like a big family. This is the ethos that’s at the core of club culture and fabric’s operations.

fabric do their best to keep their customers safe and protect them from drugs and adopt a zero drugs policy. Closing a venue such as fabric would be an incredibly short-sighted response to a complex problem.

Let’s all come together to ask Sadiq Khan, our new Mayor of London, who won our support on his pledges to save London’s Night Time Economy and Islington Borough council, to support our campaign. Let’s ask them to back fabric’s future and the rest of our city’s clubs as icons of London’s incredible music scene and pledge to work together with him to make our clubs safer while also protecting our night time economy.

The Decision Makers

Sadiq Khan
Mayor of London
Responded
Dear Jacob, Thank you for writing to me about the future of Fabric and London’s night time economy. London’s iconic clubs are an essential part of our cultural landscape. As Mayor, I'm determined to do more to protect them, as well as our theatres, live music venues, artists workspaces, historic buildings and pubs. It is so important that people are able to enjoy a fun and safe night out in the capital. As part of our wider plan to support the night time economy, I will appoint a Night Czar to lead this work by bringing together key stakeholders including club and venue owners, planning and licensing authorities, the Metropolitan Police and members of the public. No single organisation or public body can solve these problems alone – we all need to work together to ensure London thrives as a 24-hour city, in a way that is safe and enjoyable for everyone. I am committed to using the influence of my office to overcome the numerous challenges facing the night time economy. However, it is important to note that City Hall does not have the power to intervene in licensing cases like the current situation with Fabric. Clubbing needs to be safe. There have been two tragic deaths at Fabric over recent months and there are clearly issues that need addressing. http://www.islingtongazette.co.uk/news/fabric_drug_deaths_damning_dossier_reveals_scale_of_substance_abuse_inside_farringdon_superclub_1_4674138 Fabric, the Metropolitan Police and Islington will of course have to take real action to protect the safety of everyone who enjoys a night out at the club. My team have spoken to all involved in the current situation and I am urging them to find a common sense solution that ensures the club remains open while protecting the safety of those who want to enjoy London’s clubbing scene. I welcome your call for us all to work together – City Hall, London’s music venues, local authorities, the police and others – to make our clubs safer while also protecting our night time economy. Best wishes, Sadiq Khan Mayor of London
