Save lives ! Regulate Supported Accommodation for vulnerable adults by CQC “Chanté’s Law”

The Issue

https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/737923

My beautiful daughter should still be with us today. She was failed by the system that was supposed to support her. While in a state of crisis, her support staff neglected her for 18 hours. Her life was cut short because the organization trusted to care for her did not act responsibly. It wasn't until I made a call at 7:30 am that they even bothered to check on her. This is not just our tragic story; it's a systemic failure that continues to lead to unnecessary loss of lives.

Supported accommodation providers are not governed by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) in the UK. This lack of oversight means that when safeguarding issues arise, there are no significant repercussions for substandard support. These companies profit by providing inadequate care, often using excuses like "support was declined," even when dealing with mentally ill clients in crisis. Effective support finds a way around such barriers, ensuring no call for help goes unanswered.

Statistics show that supported living providers receive significant funding but operate without the rigorous scrutiny required to ensure they maintain high standards of care. This negligence leads not only to poor support but also, tragically, to fatalities that could be prevented with proper oversight and accountability.

CQC oversight would impose critical standards and regular inspections, ensuring these accommodations provide the quality of care they advertise and promise. This change could prevent other families from experiencing the heartbreak we endure daily.

We urge policymakers to amend the existing regulations and extend CQC’s jurisdiction to include supported accommodation. It's vital to impose accountability and ensure these service providers deliver the quality support and care our loved ones deserve.

Please sign this petition to bring about necessary regulatory changes and safeguard countless vulnerable lives.

A little bit about her… Chanté adored cats, that’s putting it mildly. We couldn’t walk past the cat cafe without her squealing and making us late for an appointment.
She had one at my house called Scruffy and one at her bungalow called Kiki. She adored them both.
She was an incredible artist and had an instagram page called designmy.jpg.
She completely underestimated herself and was so self critical it made me sad.
She could have taken on the world because she was so bright but unfortunately she didn’t understand the world she lived in because of her autism and she needed support.
She was extremely bright but her autism meant she had a speech and language deficit and this meant she didn’t always process language in the correct way.
People found this hard to understand because she processed information with great understanding at times.
When she was on form her humour, wit and smile were magical.
She was unique, hilarious, shocking and great fun to be around.
She is going to be so greatly missed!
