Save Lebanon's Historic 1935 Courthouse from Demolition!

Save Lebanon's Historic 1935 Courthouse from Demolition!
The Issue
As a proud resident of Lebanon, Kentucky, I am deeply concerned about the potential demolition of our beloved 1935 courthouse. This three-story brick, limestone, and concrete structure stands as a symbol of our town's strength and rich history. It is not just a building; it represents the resilience and perseverance of our community.
Lebanon has faced its fair share of challenges throughout history. General Morgan burned down our town twice during the Civil War, yet we rose from the ashes each time. The historic courthouse stands as a testament to our ability to overcome adversity and preserve our heritage.
Constructed by the Works Progress Administration (WPA) in the Classical Revival style, this architectural gem holds immense historical value for Lebanon. It is an integral part of our identity and serves as a contributing property to the Lebanon Historic Commercial District, which was rightfully placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987.
Preserving this courthouse is not just about maintaining an old building; it is about honoring our past while shaping a brighter future for generations to come. By protecting this piece of history, we can continue to educate ourselves and future generations about Lebanon's remarkable history.
The courthouse currently houses the Marion County Heritage Center where I have had the privilege to work. This center serves as an invaluable resource for locals and visitors alike by showcasing exhibits that highlight Lebanon's unique heritage. Losing this historic landmark would not only rob us of physical space but also diminish opportunities for cultural enrichment within our community.
I urge you all to join me in signing this petition calling on local authorities to halt any plans for demolishing this iconic structure. Together, let us send a clear message that preserving Lebanon's history matters deeply to us.
