Points to include in your email

·             Media reports suggest a significant area of Leazes Park - the city's oldest public park - is going to be built on to make way for a new football stadium, despite no formal plans being in place

·             Media reports suggest the Secretary of State will be making a decision, not the local planning authority

·             Newcastle City Council states it has not had any discussions about the plans

·             Leazes Park predates the football stadium and is a Grade II listed park and garden deserving of protection

·             Parks and green spaces are essential for the health and wellbeing of Newcastle residents and support a diverse range of wildlife, as well as mitigating for the impacts of climate change, including purifying the air, reducing the urban heat island effect and reducing flooding

·             Wildlife is declining in Newcastle as increasing numbers of green spaces are paved over and lost to development

·             Millions of pounds of public money has been spent on Leazes Park for the benefit of people and wildlife, not just football fans

·             General lack of transparency and accountability

·             More than 1,300 people have signed an online petition calling for a referendum on the plans
