Almost 1,000 people have signed our petition calling for a referendum on whether parts of Newcastle’s oldest park should be paved over to make way for a new football stadium.
We are pleased that the local media has reported on this and that the local planning authority has now commented on the proposals in the press.

There is clearly public support for a new stadium and the petition has prompted some colourful comments, but there are also concerns from people keen to take a more balanced approach to protecting Newcastle’s natural and built heritage.
One thing is clear: the expansion of the stadium should not be at the expense of green space and wildlife, particularly at a time when green space and wildlife have never been more under threat.
Thank you to everyone who has signed and shared our petition. Please continue to spread the word.
