Save Lake Janagdan

The Issue

LAKE JANAGDAN is one of the major lakes in Ormoc City, Philippines. In fact, it is so unique as it is the only crater lake in our City.

Now, DOT in partnership with DPWH and as proposed by the congressional office, want to pave a road leading to Lake Janagdan, passing through the surrounding forest which is recognized by the DENR as the "remaining undisturbed forest". The title of the project is "Construction/Improvement of Access Roads leading to Declared Tourism Destinations Milagro-Cambantog-Cabingtan-Alto Peak Road leading to Lake Janagdan Alto Peak Ormoc Vegetable Farm, Brgy. Milagro, Ormoc City". It is a 3-phase project. What is being implemented now is phase 1 which includes the brgy. road and 900-meter new road opening. Lake Janagdan is the water source of the community.

The REASONS for opposing the road project are the following:

1. Lake Janagdan is the water source of the residents of Brgy. Cabintan.

--It is feared that with negative effects of mass tourism, time will come that the community will no longer have  fresh and clean water to drink.

2. The area is considered to be highly susceptible to landslide per Geo-Hazard Map of PROJECT NOAH.

3. Lake Janagdan is part of Anonang-Lobi Range which is an established Key Biodiversity Are (KBA) which KBA 89.

--This means that restricted range species to critically endangered species were found to be dwelling within the area which must be protected at all cause, least disturb it with the construction of access roads.

4. Lake Janagdan is famous for its nature trail.

--Concrete roads will only invite irresponsible tourists. Lake Janagdan is visited because of its natural and exciting trail. Let tourists enjoy the wonders and beauty of the natural gem of Lake Janagdan.

OBJECTIVE

The objective of this petition is to ask those in power to re-route the new road so that it will not pass through the timberland but only on areas where local farmers will greatly benefit.

It is further aimed that Phases 2 and 3 will be ultimately discarded.

PLEASE HELP US SAVE LAKE JANAGDAN.
