Save Kaziranga: Protect Wildlife, Land and People
The Issue
Kaziranga is not just a tourist destination. It is a globally important wildlife ecosystem and home to countless species, as well as communities that have lived alongside it for generations.
Today, Kaziranga faces growing pressure from large-scale tourism and infrastructure projects. The proposed luxury hotel project near Kaziranga has raised serious concerns about land rights, livelihoods, and environmental protection. Activist Pranab Doley, who has opposed the project, was arrested and later detained under the National Security Act after being granted bail.
There are also concerns over the proposal to reduce the Eco-Sensitive Zone (ESZ) around Kaziranga from the existing 10-kilometre buffer to just 1 kilometre. Such a drastic reduction could weaken ecological safeguards around the national park and increase pressure from construction, tourism, and other development activities in areas that are vital to wildlife.
Kaziranga needs stronger protection, not weaker safeguards. We urge the authorities to protect its forests, wildlife corridors, surrounding ecosystems, and the communities that have coexisted with Kaziranga for generations.
Our Demands:
1. Stop the proposed reduction of Kaziranga’s Eco-Sensitive Zone from 10 km to 1 km.
Do not reduce the Eco-Sensitive Zone around Kaziranga without first making all scientific studies, maps, wildlife-movement data and expert assessments publicly available. Any change must be based on independent scientific evidence, meaningful public consultation and a transparent assessment of its impact on wildlife and local communities.
2. Protect Kaziranga from harmful large-scale development.
Stop or review projects that could damage Kaziranga’s forests, wetlands, grasslands, wildlife corridors, water systems and surrounding ecosystems. No major tourism or infrastructure project should be approved without a proper assessment of its cumulative impact on the environment and local communities.
3. Protect the land, livelihoods and rights of local communities.
Ensure that Indigenous, Adivasi and other local communities are not displaced or deprived of their land and livelihoods by tourism or infrastructure projects. Communities must have a meaningful role in decisions affecting their land and livelihoods, with all legal protections fully respected.
4. Protect the right to peaceful protest and review Pranab Doley’s detention.
Protect the right of environmental activists, community members and citizens to peacefully protest and speak against projects affecting Kaziranga. Immediately review the grounds and necessity of Pranab Doley’s detention under the National Security Act, with due process and judicial oversight.
5. Make land, project and environmental information public.
Publish complete and accessible information about land ownership and allocation, leases, environmental clearances, project agreements, beneficiaries, financial interests, rehabilitation and compensation related to major projects around Kaziranga.
