Hello, thank you all for taking the time to sign this petition!

It is time to ask for better road salt in KCMO! The goal is to have more eco-friendly road salts, at least in Kansas City, Missouri by the winter of 2021. Please continue to share this petition (www.change.org/savekansascity) with your friends and family. 

If you live in Missouri, or if you know anyone who lives in Missouri, I would truly appriciate it if you sent an email to Mayor Quinton Lucas (mayor of KCMO) at MayorQ@kcmo.org, asking him to supplement the current road salts with eco-friendly alternatives. (You can still send an email to Mayor Lucas even if you do not live in Missouri)! The email could go something like this if you would like an example:

Dear Mayor Lucas,

My name is [enter your name here] and as a resident of [where you live], I am concerned about the type of road salt used during the winter in Kansas City, Missouri. I would like to request that KCMO supplements their current road salt with eco-friendly (biodegradable) alternatives, such as calcium magnesium acetate, potassium acetate, and/or Beet Heet. I already know that in most areas of Missouri, they salt the roads with 80% salt brine and 20% Beet Heet. However, I believe that KCMO can take this to the next level with more eco-friendly salt than just 20% Beet Heet. 

I am saddened to learn that common road salt has negative effects such as tainting groundwater and hurting wildlife. Having more eco-friendly road salt would decrease these environmental risks and be cheaper for the city in the long-term. (It has been shown that eco-friendly road salts use less salt per square mile). I am not asking to completely replace the type of current road salt; I am asking to simply supplement the current road salt, since often, some amount of regular salt is needed to aid the eco-friendly ones. 

I understand that as the mayor, you are busy with caring for other issues; and we thank you very much for that! Please do consider that you give this issue your immediate attention because continuing to use more common road salt than eco-friendly ones will only hurt the environment more and likely increase the cost of the city using mostly regular salt. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me.
