Save Kansas City: Time for Responsible Road Salt

Save Kansas City: Time for Responsible Road Salt
The Issue
Road salt is toxic for aquatic ecosystems, like the Missouri River and other streams/creeks in Kansas City, Missouri. KCMO used 40,000 tons of salt this winter. We are asking for applicable, enforceable practices that will specifically target reducing the amount of road salt applied to roads, in order to protect aquatic nature and possibly even groundwater.
This winter, KC is using 40,000 tons of road salt, compared to the 2020-2021 winter, when they used 27,000 tons of road salt. Action is needed to protect the environment, infrastructure, citizens' cars, and KC's nature.
How you can help: Email Mayor Quinton Lucas (mayor of Kansas City, Missouri) at MayorQ@kcmo.org asking him to have enforceable practices for reducing road salt, and link this petition. Or, share this petition (www.change.org/savekansascity with your family and friends. Or, educate yourself on how road salt poisons ecosystems.
Responsible road salt means:
-Ensuring salting equipment is calibrated (thus less salt used, but more road protected)
-Ensuring that salt is applied to match pavement temperature
-Using all efforts to find eco-friendly alternatives within the reasonable budget
-Increasing the use of salt brine compared to the use of granular road salt (less salt, but in liquid form so it protects the same amount of road)
-Certifying salt applicators with knowledge & tools to do these practices
If you have any questions, do not hesitate! Please send an email to marialuna@marialuna.org
Do not donate. The money does not go towards helping protect ecosystems or helping reduce road salt toxicity in Kansas City, Missouri.
