The Issue

Dear Friends,

For many years, JD’s Supermarket has played an important role in the Riverside-Montopolis community, serving as more than just a grocery store, but a lifeline for the community. Today, it is at risk because of the light rail development project by the Austin Transit Partnership. With the development of this project, multiple pillars of the community, such as JD’s Market, can be displaced.

If no action is taken, our community could lose access to JD’s. This would impact the single mothers buying groceries for their kids, senior citizens  on fixed income in the community, and the immigrant communities that feel at home shopping at JD’s; losing access to JD’s would affect you. We are not against the project, and we believe there is an opportunity to work with ATP and the City to build light rail with our community, not through it. We are asking you to show your support for your community so we can bring the decision makers to the table, and find a solution that benefits everyone. Together, we can help preserve JD’s Supermarket for current and future generations.

Thank you for standing with us.

Sincerely,

JD’s Supermarket

Amigos,

Atentamente,
JD's Supermarket

Responded
There are no plans to displace J.D.’s Supermarket as part of the construction of Austin Light Rail. The design published in January 2026 does not require any changes to the building, access or use of JD’s Supermarket. A partial acquisition to move the sidewalk and overhead distribution poles closer to the building along East Riverside Dr. may be required for the project. If this partial acquisition is needed along the property, this would not block access to JD's Supermarket during or after construction. As design work continues, ATP seeks to minimize impacts to properties along the entire alignment where possible and will continue to reach out to the community, property owners and businesses to keep them informed. Should you have any questions regarding this project, please email input@atptx.org and a team member will reach out. - Austin Transit Partnership
