Save Ibiza’s Free Music: NO to the Drum Ban at Benirràs
El problema
Ibiza is renowned worldwide not only for its mega-clubs, but also for its free spirit, multicultural community, and deep bond with music and nature.
In recent days, the authorities have approved a ban on playing drums at Benirràs (Benirràs Beach, municipality of Sant Joan), citing safety and noise concerns. The measure is grounded in Law 7/2013 of 26 November—which regulates the installation, access and exercise of activities in the Balearic Islands (Article 54: control of acoustic pollution)—and in the Municipal Ordinance on Citizen Coexistence of Sant Joan de Labritja (Article 16), which regulates noisy activities in public spaces.
Moreover, controls on music in the small beach bars along the coast are being tightened, requiring licences and permits that are practically impossible to obtain, thereby shifting the entire musical experience to large private clubs and centralising culture solely within high-impact businesses.
👉 This is a serious mistake: music cannot be reduced to a luxury commodity. Music is an intangible cultural heritage—recognised by UNESCO in the 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage—and the community drumming at Benirràs has been part of the island’s living identity for over 40 years, serving as a symbol of peace after the armed conflicts of the 1990s.
Banning drumming and restricting free music means:
✅ erasing Ibiza’s history of coexistence
✅ dismantling spaces for intercultural exchange
✅ discouraging community and peace values
Therefore, we ask the authorities to:
Review the ban on drumming at Benirràs, introducing reasonable time limits instead of completely prohibiting this cultural expression.
Recognise popular music as a cultural and social right, protected in the same way as other forms of intangible heritage.
Ibiza must not become a place where culture is reserved only for those who can afford €100 tickets. The real Ibiza is open, free, and musical.
👉 Sign this petition to defend Ibiza’s authenticity, openness and diversity. Together we can protect its essence and ensure that music remains a language of unity, not a privilege for the few.
Music is not a luxury: it is culture; it is life.
