Save Hugh Dingess Grade School from closing in Harts of Logan County, WV
The Issue
I grew up in Logan County, West Virginia, where small communities and tight-knit bonds define our everyday lives. As a grandparent, I am deeply concerned about the potential closure of Hugh Dingess Grade School in Harts. For generations, this school has been more than just an educational institution; it has been the heartbeat of our community, a safe haven for our children, and a place where individuals come together to nurture future leaders.
The impending closure means that our children could face longer bus rides to overcrowded schools elsewhere, which is far from ideal. Young children will have to wake up earlier, spend more time traveling, and lose precious rest and study time, all of which will negatively impact their academic performance and overall well-being. As such, closing Hugh Dingess Grade School isn't just a logistical change, but a blow to the childhood experience of countless kids in our community.
Numerous studies highlight the importance of community schools in rural areas, noting improvements in academic success when children learn close to home. Furthermore, the social and emotional benefits of attending a local school are significant. Kids establish strong friendships within their locality, and parents are more likely to be involved in their child's education, creating a more supportive and nurturing environment.
Economically, closing this school could lead to larger, long-term costs. Communities often see a decline in local property values with school closures, and family relocations may lead to undesirable fluctuations in the county’s demographics. It's crucial to consider sustainable alternatives such as increased funding, enhancing school programs, and community partnerships to boost enrollment and resources, rather than shuttering our school.
We need voices to demand that our local government and school board prioritize the preservation of Hugh Dingess Grade School. We must show them how essential this institution is to our community and the significant adverse effects of its closure. This school is also used as a voting precinct for our area. Had one politician to visit a few weeks ago, and he said that if the school closed he was gonna suggest that the school to be sold shortly thereafter so what does that tell you about the condition of the building? That the building is in good shape!
Please join me in signing this petition to save Hugh Dingess Grade School, ensuring that our children can continue to receive quality education right here in Harts, Logan County. Let’s preserve the legacy of our community for generations to come.
