Save homeless meals program Melbourne
The issue
There is a homeless meals program run by cohealth community health centre and the government is cutting funding to kick disabled and mentally ill homeless peoples off this meals program, without them even receiving NDIS meals funding and even if NDIS meals were to get funded in the future disabled and or mentally ill homeless peoples have no where to safely store meals without having housing and a fridge. And most homeless disabled peoples have no energy to appeal ndis or the community health centers meals programs funders as they dont have literacy, many struggle with reading and writing, and they are acutely unwell from impacts of homelessness, violence and abuse.
Many disabled and mentally ill homeless peoples who have had bad experiences with NDIS, are planning on giving up the NDIS over this funding cut (so they can continue to access the meals funding). As healthy food is a major survival consideration while being homeless and too disabled to be able to prepare own meals. Lack of nutrition for those who do not give up NDIS and go without meals funding will lead to more hospitalisations and deaths of severely disadvantaged disabled peoples. As eating canned food and cheaper takeaway meals high in salt for those already living with chronic illnesses and complex health issues who are going through severe stress and trauma trying to survive on a daily basis and trying to find housing, will likely result in deaths, heart attacks, strokes and further severity of permanent disabilities.
The cafe meals program is funded by government Department of families fairness and housing and funded or administered also through local Yara City Council. NDIA won't contribute to the meals funding or fund ndis funded homeless cafe meals for disabled homeless peoples on the NDIS despite appeals, formal complaints and writing to Bill Shortens office. Many disabled and mentally ill homeless women have escaped family violence and it is not safe to attend other community meals places for lunch or dinners, without being sexually harassed, stalked, assaulted and or raped as many non-homeless criminals and sex offenders go to those places to target vulnerable women and many have been bashed and raped while trying to access food on low incomes.
We want the funding decision reversed and pro bono or community legal center support to take this to the supreme court to put injunction on government, as it effects disabled homeless peoples immediate health and safety, or see if we can first succced at VCAT disability discrimination case. We have suggested other practical ways the program can save funding without kicking disabled homeless peoples off the program, but funders won't change the decision.
