The Issue

Dan Slater, Mayor, City of Orange and Members of the Orange City Council

A redevelopment project pending before the City proposes demolition of Holiday Skate Center in replacement with residential construction. The developer has requested rezoning of the site for commercial use to residential in order for this project to proceed.

We, the undersigned residents, skaters, families, and community members of Orange, California urge you to reject this project which would cause the permanent closure of Holiday Skate Center.

For nearly 53 years, Holiday Skate Center has been an important recreational facility in our community. More than just a recreational facility, it is a safe, inclusive, and vital hub that promotes physical health, youth sports (roller figure skating), and social connection for skaters of all ages and backgrounds.

Holiday Skate Center is one of the few remaining affordable, family-friendly indoor activities in our area. There are no other traditional roller skating rinks in the City of Orange, and only one other in all of Orange County. We believe that community and recreational spaces should be protected and celebrated. Therefore, we respectfully request that local leaders reject the proposed redevelopment project.

We ask that you prioritize the health, recreation, and spirit of our community over commercial gain.

Please help us save Holiday Skate Center so that future generations may continue to enjoy it.

Help save the iconic Holiday Skate Center of Orange: Help us stop the  proposed zoning change that will demolish the rink, just to  erect 32 new townhomes. Let's stand up for our history!

Thank you all for sharing your passion about this beloved landmark in our community. I too spent many joyful childhood afternoons at Holiday for school trips, fundraisers, and birthdays. While I wish there was a simple way to save this facility, the property is now fully owned privately, and the current owner has the right to pursue a new vision. However, I encourage you all to keep sharing your concerns and messages as the Planning Commission, and eventually the City Council, deliberates the property’s future use. Your voices matter and help decision makers understand all sides of these issues prior to any final decision being made. Thank you, Arianna Barrios District 1 • Orange City Council City of Orange, California
