Save historic Jackson Hall of Lees College from Demolition by Hazard CTC

Save historic Jackson Hall of Lees College from Demolition by Hazard CTC
The Issue
Jackson Hall has stood as a beacon of history and community for nearly a century in the heart of downtown Jackson, Kentucky. As a proud resident and advocate for preserving our local heritage, I am deeply saddened to learn that Hazard Community and Technical College (HCTC), the current owner, plans to demolish this historic structure. Constructed in 1927, Jackson Hall has been an integral part of the Lees College legacy and a vital component of our community's fabric since its inception. It held a story within its walls, narrating the educational journey and memories of countless individuals, until HCTC acquired the campus in 1996.
The decision to demolish is based on perceived financial burdens, but we cannot let cost be the sole determinant in erasing a significant piece of our history. The architectural beauty and historical significance of Jackson Hall make it worth the effort to preserve. Many cities have successfully found innovative solutions to maintain and repurpose such historical buildings, ensuring they continue to serve as living monuments to the past.
We propose that HCTC explore alternatives to demolition, such as seeking historical grants, engaging in community fundraising efforts, or converting the building into a community center or renewed classroom building. These avenues present viable options to not only preserve the building but also to enhance community engagement and education.
By coming together as a community, we can work towards a solution that respects our past while creating value for future generations. The history embodied by Jackson Hall is irreplaceable, and its loss would diminish the cultural and historical tapestry of Breathitt County and Eastern Kentucky as a whole.
Sign this petition to urge Hazard Community and Technical College to reconsider their plans and to collaborate with local historians, community leaders, and preservationists in saving Historic Jackson Hall. Together, let's commit to preserving our legacy and fostering pride in our shared history for years to come. Please lend your voice and signature to this cause.
