The Issue

Bosse Field is more than just a sports stadium to me; it is a treasure trove of memories. Over the years, I have spent countless hours in its stands, cheering with family and friends, soaking in the shared joy and camaraderie that only this historic place can offer. From its classic design to its deep-seated roots in our community, Bosse Field is an irreplaceable part of our heritage in Evansville, Indiana.

Built in 1915, Bosse Field is the third oldest baseball stadium still in use in the United States, behind only Fenway Park and Wrigley Field. This iconic stadium has been a witness to over a century of American history and baseball triumphs. Its charm and vintage aesthetic offer a unique atmosphere that simply cannot be replicated by modern renovations.

However, plans to install a new turf infield threaten to alter the very essence of Bosse Field, dramatically changing its historic character. Turf fields, while practical, lack the nostalgic feel and unique experience that come from playing on natural grass. Such a change would not only erase a piece of our local history, but it would also diminish the character and authenticity of this beloved site.

Preserving Bosse Field in its original form is crucial. By keeping its natural grass infield, we honor the legacy of all those who have played on this ground, from minor league legends to future stars. This is not just about maintaining a playing field; it is about preserving the soul of our community.

To ensure Bosse Field continues to be a cherished landmark, I urge community leaders and decision-makers to reconsider the turf project and focus on preserving the historical integrity of the stadium. Instead, resources could be directed towards maintenance and restoration projects that enhance and protect the structure’s original features, ensuring it remains a vibrant venue for generations to come.

Please join me in the movement to keep Bosse Field's historic charm alive for current fans and future generations. Sign this petition to advocate for the preservation of Bosse Field’s original form—let's protect its grass infield and uphold its powerful legacy. Sign now to make your voice heard.

I appreciate the opportunity to reply to the petition, as I have not been contacted by residents concerning the drainage and turf project at Bosse Field. I took some time to reach out to some faithful attendees of Triplets/Otters games to learn more about why some of our neighbors have concerns about the installation of a turf playing surface. All to whom I spoke are in agreement about the benefits of installing turf in the playing area. We believe drainage repairs and the addition of artificial turf will create more opportunities for students to play at the beloved venue. In addition, the turf addition will bring additional usage opportunities. Those who do not attend Otters games will have the chance to visit the historic venue - and ensure its use for years to come. Changing to turf will make us eligible to host IHSAA sectional, regional and semi-state tournament baseball games. This will allow student athletes from outside our immediate area to also experience playing at Bosse Field. Thank you for your love and concern for this community treasure. Please do not hesitate to reach out with additional questions. Amy DeVries EVSC School Board Secretary

Thank you for reaching out and sharing your questions regarding the proposed installation of a synthetic turf playing surface at Historic Bosse Field. We recognize and respect the importance of preserving the history and character of this treasured community landmark. The primary purpose of this investment is to expand opportunities for student-athletes to play baseball at Bosse Field while improving the reliability, safety, and overall use of the facility. Bosse Field is a unique asset, and we want as many EVSC baseball players as possible to experience competing in this historic venue during their high school careers. A modern turf surface and improved drainage system would significantly reduce the number of games canceled or rescheduled because of wet field conditions. Even when rain occurs earlier in the day, the field could often remain playable. This would provide greater scheduling consistency for student-athletes, coaches, families, and school personnel. Rescheduled games can be especially difficult for families managing work obligations, transportation, and the schedules of other children. Although Reitz High School currently uses Bosse Field as its home field, the improvements would benefit students throughout the district. When games at other EVSC baseball facilities cannot be played because of wet conditions, Bosse Field could serve as an alternative location. This would allow more students from across the corporation to benefit from the facility. The installation of turf would also strengthen Bosse Field’s eligibility to host IHSAA sectional, regional, and semi-state tournament games. Hosting these events would provide student-athletes from throughout Indiana with the opportunity to compete at Bosse Field while bringing additional visitors and activity to our community. EVSC has experienced the benefits of transitioning from natural grass to turf at its outdoor stadiums for many years. In addition to improving drainage and reducing weather-related disruptions, properly maintained turf provides a consistent and dependable playing surface for student-athletes. The proposed improvement would also create opportunities for Bosse Field to host additional youth athletic activities and community events. Expanding the facility’s use will help ensure that this historic venue remains active, relevant, and accessible for future generations. We understand that any change to Bosse Field deserves thoughtful consideration. The goal is not to diminish its history, but to protect and strengthen its future by allowing more students, families, and community members to experience this extraordinary facility. Thank you again for your interest and for your commitment to Historic Bosse Field and our student-athletes. Sincerely, Chris
