Hillcrest Estate's historic layout and green spaces are under threat of 'infill' development by Haringey Council.

Hillcrest was one of the earliest post-war social housing estates and was designed according to the principles championed by Nye Bevan: generous spacing, light, air, greenery and community.

The open spaces between the blocks are an essential and highly successful part of that vision filled with mature trees, a community garden and areas to walk and play -  much used and loved by the residents and wildlife. They are not vacant land waiting to be filled.

We support the need for more social housing, but new development should not come at the expense of the qualities that make Hillcrest an outstanding example of post-war housing design. It should be preserved and replicated - not ruined.

We ask Haringey Council to:

Recognise the heritage significance of Hillcrest Estate and its landscape.
Protect the spaces between the blocks from infill.
Work with residents and independent experts to explore alternatives.
