The Issue

Hazlewood Community Primary School is exactly what it says on the tin—a community school, a family within the heart of Wideopen, Newcastle upon Tyne. Our school, with nearly 300 children, is a central hub for our families, a safe haven!

Over recent years, our journey has been fraught with challenges. The school building faced severe concrete and structural damage, leaving us in dire need of a safe learning environment for our children. After a hard-fought battle, we were able to secure a modular building to continue our mission of providing quality education. This was a victory for both the school and the community; a victory born from unwavering determination and collective resolve.

However, just as we began to find our footing again, the local council has proposed a merger with Greenfields Community Primary School, citing a decline in student numbers as their rationale. To us, this reasoning seems unfair to the almost 300 students currently enrolled at Hazlewood. The merger threatens not only our caring family of staff and families, but our safe haven for our beloved children of all ages.

Our school is more than just school; it moulds, shapes, and supports each child who walks through its doors and binds us in a collective spirit. The forced merger would completely change and ruin the nurturing environment we have carefully created. The loss of our community school would create a hole in Wideopen that could not easily be filled.

We must act now! We urge North Tyneside Council to reconsider this merger and listen to the voices of those it will impact the most—the children, parents, teachers, and local residents. Let's keep the incredible community spirit that Hazlewood represents and ensure that our future generations can enjoy the same supportive and enriching educational environment.

Please sign this petition to help us save Hazlewood Community Primary School and protect its essential role within the family of our community. Every signature counts in this crucial fight to keep our cherished school open.
