The issue

Hardrock Nunawading, our favourite indoor climbing facility, has closed indefinitely on 19 December 2025, and is headed for demolition. Bought by a developer who has no interest in the skilfully crafted walls nor the communities they serve, it is going to be bulldozed unless we can convince Council, State and potential investors that it must absolutely be saved. Not only has it brought together climbers of all ages, skills and abilities, it is also a part of Victoria's heritage, marking the beginnings of the sport of indoor rock climbing.

Many birthday parties have echoed through Hardrock Climbing at Nunawading, and we've seen year after year of school kids and scouts take swings on the ropes, screaming excitedly. Development groups of all ages have worked hard to improve their climbing and finish climbs of higher and higher grades. Enthusiastic staff have created ever new climbing challenges for them and watched with glee how their creations were received. The closure of this facility would mean the end of an era and the loss of a safe and inclusive community that developed around Hardrock Nunawading.

The current threat to Hardrock Nunawading stems from the increasing urban development that promises immense profits that recreational facilities can't deliver. Yet community spaces make the area livable. Governments on all levels must step in to prevent development that destroys culture, like the community spirit alive at Hardrock Nunawading.

There are viable solutions to keep Hardrock Nunawading open. Although the site has been bought by a developer, a building permit has not yet been issued, or indeed applied for. Achieving substantial community support can convince planning authorities not to approve solutions that require the demolition of Hardrock Climbing.

Please sign this petition to show your support for Hardrock Nunawading and to urge local leaders to take action in preserving this invaluable community resource. Together we can make a difference and ensure that Hardrock Nunawading remains a part of our community for generations to come. Help save Hardrock Nunawading by adding your name to this petition. Every signature counts in our fight to protect this cherished place.
