Save Great Nicobar: No Blind Imitation of the 'Singapore Model'—India Needs a Secure 'Tajpur-Port Blair-Nicobar' Mega Corridor
To: The Honorable Prime Minister, Government of India
CC: The Honorable Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, and The Honorable Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways
Honorable Prime Minister,
We fully support the initiative to build a deep-sea port (International Container Transshipment Terminal - ICTT) on Great Nicobar Island to ensure our strategic security in the Indian Ocean and enhance India's dominance in international trade. However, the accompanying plan to construct a 'megacity' for 3,00,000 people on this earthquake-prone and ecologically fragile island could lead to a catastrophic disaster for both the nation's economy and its environment.
We want India to create a world-class hub for international trade, but not by blindly imitating the model of a small island nation. Therefore, we present to you a completely scientific, eco-friendly, and decentralized alternative blueprint—the 'Tajpur-Port Blair-Nicobar Tri-Node Corridor'.
Our specific arguments and proposals are detailed below:
1. Why the 'Singapore Model' in Great Nicobar is Unscientific and Suicidal
The government's current plan is based on the 'Singapore Model,' which is entirely incompatible with India's vast geographical advantages.
Geographical Compulsion vs. Advantage: Singapore is a very small island nation, compelling them to build an international port and a massive corporate city in the same location. India has no such scarcity of space.
Enormous Risk: Great Nicobar is located in Seismic Zone V (the highest earthquake risk zone) and is dangerously close to the epicenter of the 2004 tsunami. Building a city for 3,00,000 people here at the cost of trillions of rupees means risking catastrophic destruction from natural disasters at any moment.
Logistical Nightmare: The perpetual cost of transporting food, drinking water, and construction materials via ships for 3,00,000 people, 1,500 kilometers away from the mainland, will devour a significant portion of the profits generated by the port.
2. Our Proposed 'Tri-Node Hub and Spoke' System
Instead of cramming everything into one place like Singapore, we propose utilizing modern technology to divide this system into three strategic and highly advantageous tiers:
Tier 1 - Great Nicobar (The Automated Transit Hub): There will be no megacity here. Utilizing only 10% of the proposed land, let there be solely a state-of-the-art, automated International Container Transshipment Terminal (ICTT) and a military base. This will save the island's invaluable 10,00,000 trees from being felled and protect the reserved forests of the endangered 'Shompen' tribe.
Tier 2 - Port Blair (The Strategic Command Center): Let Port Blair serve as the 'mid-way bridge' of this system. Since it houses India's only Tri-Service Command (Army, Navy, and Air Force), the military security, surveillance, and emergency logistical support for the Nicobar port can be controlled from here. This ensures airtight security without placing direct pressure on Nicobar itself.
Tier 3 - Tajpur, West Bengal (The Economic Brain & Megacity): The corporate control of the Nicobar port, its international headquarters, and the proposed modern city for 3,00,000 people should be built on the mainland, specifically in Tajpur, West Bengal. The automated port in Nicobar will be operated seamlessly from here via submarine cables and a highly secure digital network.
3. What are the National Benefits of this Model?
Zero-Loss Ecosystem: Our strategic objectives will be achieved without displacing indigenous tribes or destroying ancient forests.
Agro-Economic Boom: A megacity in Tajpur will allow agricultural products (such as jute and mustard) from farmers in Eastern India to be stored in modern, climate-controlled warehouses and exported directly overseas via the Nicobar port.
Eco-Smart City: The proposed new city in Tajpur will be 100% eco-friendly. Equipped with a plastic-to-hydrogen mega plant, VOC-absorbing plant integration, and vertical hydroponics, it will serve as a model for a pollution-free city of the future.
We desire the world-class port-trade benefits of Singapore, but without inheriting their geographical limitations. India is a vast country, and our development must be distinctly Indian. By integrating Tajpur, Port Blair, and Nicobar to create this smart corridor, we will establish a system far more powerful, profitable, and secure than Singapore.
We humbly request you to review and revise the current project design in favor of this 'Tri-Node Mega Corridor' model to build a scientifically advanced and modern India while actively preventing the destruction of nature.
