Save Geneva Oaks: Protect Our Ecological and Historic Heritage!

The Issue

Updated 9/5/2023: Today, Midwest Industrial Funds started clear-cutting trees. A group of local organizers went to the site and climbed on top of equipment to stop cutting until the Kane County Sheriff removed them. This fight isn't over yet! The most historic of the 300+ year old trees aren't scheduled to be removed until October 1, 2023. Please sign and share the petition widely. See the update here:

We are a group of Geneva, Illinois and Kane County residents who are deeply concerned about the proposed project by Midwest Industrial Funds to construct warehouses that would result in the destruction of our beloved oak trees in Geneva Township. These majestic oaks, some of which have stood for over 300 years, hold immense ecological and historic significance for our community.

These oak trees play a vital role in improving air quality by absorbing harmful pollutants and releasing oxygen. They also act as natural filters, enhancing water quality by preventing soil erosion and filtering rainwater before it reaches our streams and rivers. The shade provided by these trees helps mitigate heat during scorching summers, making our town more livable for residents and visitors alike.

Moreover, these oak trees offer much-needed green space in Kane County. They provide a sanctuary for wildlife, including numerous bird species that rely on them for nesting habitats. And oak acorns provide food for 100+ vertebrate species of wildlife. Additionally, they contribute to the overall aesthetic appeal of our community, attracting tourists who appreciate the beauty of nature.

In addition to their ecological importance, there is evidence that this area holds historical artifacts belonging to indigenous peoples.

The loss of these oak trees would be an irreparable blow to both our environment and heritage. It is crucial that we take action now to protect them from being destroyed by this proposed development project.

Protect our ecological and historic heritage in Geneva, Illinois

Therefore, I urge you all to join me in signing this petition demanding that Midwest Industrial Funds reconsider their plans and find an alternative location for their warehouses. Let us stand together as a community united in preserving our ecological integrity and honoring the history embedded within these ancient oaks.
