Save Ellesmere Port's Day Services
The Issue
My son has been part of Ellesmere Port's Day Centre community for the past 15 years. It has been his sanctuary, a place where he feels safe and understood. Like many others attending this day centre, he has complex and profound multiple disabilities and is non-verbal. This centre is more than just a facility; it is a lifeline for him and the other adults who rely on its specialised care and nurturing environment.
Cheshire West and Chester Council's recent decision to relocate these vital services to Chester is not only thoughtless but also discriminates against individuals who deserve consistent care. The travel difficulties and the loss of familiar and supportive staff they depend on will only exacerbate the challenges faced by these vulnerable adults.
The move will mean additional travel time and stress for those with disabilities and their families, many of whom rely on accessible and affordable local transport. Moreover, it risks severing the relationships and community bonds forged over years, which are irreplaceable to the well-being of these adults.
Current statistics indicate that in the UK, disabled individuals already face significant barriers to accessing adequate social services. Displacing them from established centres like Ellesmere Port only adds to this existing burden. According to statistics from the Office for National Statistics, transportation and accessibility issues remain one of the top challenges for disabled individuals in our country.
We are calling on Cheshire West and Chester Council to reconsider its plans to relocate our community day services to Chester. Instead, we are urging the Council to invest in maintaining a suitable building within Ellesmere Port that can continue to meet the needs of adults with profound and complex needs.
The existing service at the Healthy Living Centre in the town centre is currently unable to accommodate these individuals due to their specialist equipment, accessibility and care requirements. The Coronation Centre therefore provides an essential service for adults whose needs cannot be met within the alternative provision.
Please join us in fighting for inclusivity and the right for all to access community services close to home. Sign this petition to protect our vulnerable community members and preserve Ellesmere Port's essential day services.
