The Issue

The Edward Kelley Schoolhouse has been a pillar of our community since 1869. As the oldest continuously operating schoolhouse in Sacramento County—and possibly all of California—this historic site has served as an educational cornerstone for generations. Since transitioning to a preschool in 1961, it has championed a unique parent participation model that allows caregivers to play an integral role in their children's early education by spending one day a week actively participating in the classroom.

In 1981, the Edward Kelley Schoolhouse was rightfully added to the National Register of Historic Places, solidifying its importance not just to Sacramento County but to the heritage of our entire state. This school is more than just a building; it is a living testament to our educational history and a bastion of community heritage.

Today, the Edward Kelley Parent Participation Preschool faces potential closure, a fate that endangers not only its historical significance but also the benefits of its unique educational model. The closure would displace countless families who rely on this institution for affordable and meaningful early education.

Losing this school would mean losing a vital chapter of our community's history, and it is up to us to ensure this doesn't happen. We call upon educational authorities and community leaders to recognize the unparalleled worth of the Edward Kelley Schoolhouse and to work collaboratively to secure funding or partnerships that can sustain its operation for future generations.

If you believe in preserving history while fostering innovative educational opportunities, please stand with us. Sign this petition to save the Edward Kelley Parent Participation Preschool, and help us ensure that this landmark continues to enrich our community for years to come.
