Petition to: Midlothian Council and Local MSP

The children’s play area at the bottom of Duchess Park estate in Woodburn, Dalkeith is under threat of removal—and our community cannot afford to lose it.

This park is more than just a play space. It is a vital hub for local families—a place where children play, friendships are formed, and parents connect. It supports children’s physical health, mental wellbeing, and encourages outdoor activity in a safe, accessible environment.

The land is owned by the Scottish Woodland Ltd, who previously maintained the play parks but have now stopped. We understand there are plans to remove the play area entirely.

If this happens, our community will lose one of its few dedicated spaces for children and families. There is no clear replacement, and its loss would have a lasting negative impact on local residents.

Scottish law and planning policy recognise how important spaces like this are:

  • The Planning (Scotland) Act 2019 requires local authorities to ensure there are enough safe and accessible play opportunities for children.
  • The Play Sufficiency Assessment Regulations 2023 require councils to consider the needs of children and communities.
  • National Planning Framework 4 supports protecting and improving spaces for play and recreation.

Removing this well-used park without replacement goes against these principles and risks leaving local children without adequate play provision.

We are calling on Midlothian Council and our local representatives to:

  • Immediately halt any plans to remove the play area
  • Work with the landowner and community to secure its future
  • Ensure proper consultation with residents, including children and families

This park is the heart of our community. Once it is gone, it cannot easily be replaced.

Please sign this petition to help save Duchess Park play area and protect a vital space for our children and community.
