The Story of Doddagubbi Lake - Bangalore’s Best Kept Secret

Imagine a beautiful lake that is very, very old—it’s been around for 500 years! For a long time, it was a happy home for sparkly fish and many different kinds of birds. It was even a place where people could drink the water because it was so clean. But now, the lake is "sick" and needs our help.

The Main Problems (Why the Lake is Sad):
Yucky "Garbage Soup": Nearby, there are big piles of trash. When it rains, the water mixed with the trash turns into a black, stinky liquid called "leachate." This yucky liquid flows right into the lake, making the water toxic (poisonous).
Fish and Birds are Getting Sick and Dying: Because the water is poisoned, the fish cannot breathe properly and are dying. When birds eat those fish or drink the water, they get sick too.
The Water is Turning Green and Bubbling: Instead of being clear and blue, the water has turned a dark, murky green. Sometimes, weird bubbles even pop up on the surface because the water is so dirty.
The "Land Mafia" (Space Stealers): Some people are trying to take parts of the lake away! They dump dirt and rocks into lake drains and also the lake wetlands to fill it up so they can build buildings on top of it. This makes the lake smaller and smaller and finally if this continues it will dry up.
Dirty Sewers: Some big buildings nearby are letting their dirty bathroom and kitchen water go straight into the lake instead of cleaning it first.
The Groundwater is Hurting: The poison from the lake is soaking into the ground. This is bad because the water under the ground is what people use in their homes for washing and drinking.

THIS WILL DESTROY SHAMBHALA FARM. THE WATER IS ALREADY POISONED.  NOW THAT THE TALAKAVERI OF DODDAGUBBI IS GONE, THERE WILL BE NO MORE WATER IN DODDAGUBBI.

DODDAGUBBI AND CHIKKAGUBBI AND KANNUR HAVE ALREADY BEEN DESTROYED BY LAND MAFIA DONS.

SHAMBHALA FARM IS THE LAST REMAINING BIT OF BANGLORE AS A GARDEN CITY AND PENSIONERS PARADISE.

Dhyan is the Author of Arya Dharma where he has outlined SHAMBHALA so that even an 8 year old can understand.

How People are Trying to Help:
Lots of people who live near the lake are worried. They are:

Making Art: Artists are putting up paper-mâché birds and putting on shows to show everyone that the lake is in trouble.
Signing Petitions: They are asking the leaders of the city to stop the trash from going into the water and to protect the lake’s borders so nobody can steal its land.
In short: The 500-year-old lake is being treated like a trash can, and the people are working hard to make sure it becomes a safe, clean home for nature again!

URGENT APPEAL: Save the 500-Year-Old Sacred Doddagubbi Lake from Toxic Poisoning and Land Mafia Encroachment

TO: The Chief Minister, Government of Karnataka, Bangalore

Copy To: Lok Ayukta, Commissioner of Police, BMTF, Minor Irrigation Department, Doddagubbi Panchayat, Kannur Panchayat, Bangalore

DATE:  January 23, 2026

FROM: Concerned Citizens for Sacred Doddagubbi Lake & Residents of Bangalore

THE URGENT SITUATION
We, the undersigned citizens, urgently petition the Government of Karnataka to intervene and save the sacred 500 year old Doddagubbi Lake (Bidarahalli Hobli, Bangalore East). Once a pristine 150-acre water body and a vital source of drinking water, the lake is now facing ecological death due to toxic leachate and systematic encroachment.

Despite a 2016 recommendation by the KLCDA to declare it a Bird Sanctuary and Wetland Area, the lake has become a toxic cesspool of toxic froth, resulting in massive fish and bird kills.

VISUAL EVIDENCE OF ECOLOGICAL DISASTER
Exhibit A: Toxic Poisoning & Wildlife Death (2025-2026)

The connection of the Kannur Lake storm water drain by BBMP has introduced deadly leachate from the Mittaganahalli Landfill, turning the lake poisonous.

OUR 5 CRITICAL DEMANDS
OFFICIAL PROTECTION: Officially notify Doddagubbi Lake as a Bird Sanctuary and Wetland Area, implementing the 2016 KLCDA recommendation to the CM.

STOP TOXIC LEACHATE: Immediately stop the overflow of poisonous water from Kannur Lake. An STP must be installed at the mouth of the Kannur Lake inlet into Doddagubbi Rajakaluve to treat leachate from the Kannur Mittaganahalli Landfill before it enters Doddagubbi.

HALT ILLEGAL SEWAGE DISCHARGE: Stop unauthorized apartments (specifically Diamond Regency, DS Max, Avila) from dumping raw sewage directly into the lake. Some of these buildings are operating without functional STPs in violation of the Jan 2016 Government Notification.

CORRECT BDA MAPS: Remove the concealment of Rajakaluves (feeder drains) in the PD 22 maps of BDA CDP 2031. These drains were erased from official maps to facilitate illegal land grabbing.

REMOVE ENCROACHMENTS (SURVEY NO. 15, DODDAGUBBI): Clear illegal encroachments in Survey No. 15, Doddagubbi where the Talakaveri (origin) of the lake’s major Rajakaluve has been completely buried.

WHY THIS MATTERS: BRAZEN LEGAL VIOLATIONS
1. Violation of NGT Buffer Zones Apartments like DS Max and Diamond Regency have built walls within 1 meter of the lake fence, violating the National Green Tribunal's mandated 75-meter buffer zone.

2. Organized Destruction The destruction of the drain in Survey No. 15 was carried out using heavy machinery. Vehicles involved (e.g., KA 50 Z 7732, KA 50 B 3726) have been identified, yet no action has been taken.

CONCLUSION
We demand accountability for these NGT violations, the restoration of the Rajakaluves, and the immediate protection of this wetland. We cannot let Doddagubbi Lake become another dead water body.
