Save DI at OneRoof Youth Shelter: Providing Essential Support for Homeless Youth

The Issue

As someone who has experienced homelessness firsthand, I understand the desperate need for safe and supportive spaces for vulnerable youth in our community. That is why I am starting this petition to urge the authorities to keep the doors of DI at OneRoof Youth Shelter open.

DI at OneRoof Youth Shelter has been a lifeline for countless young individuals aged 12-25 in Kitchener, Ontario. It provides crucial services such as shelter, food, clothing, and a warm place to stay during harsh winter months. However, due to recent budget cuts and funding challenges, there is a risk that this vital resource may be forced to close its doors.

Homelessness among youth is an urgent issue that cannot be ignored. According to a report by The Region of Waterloo Public Health Department (2019), there were over 500 homeless youth in our region alone. These young individuals face numerous challenges including mental health issues, substance abuse problems, family breakdowns, and lack of support networks.

DI at OneRoof Youth Shelter plays an essential role in addressing these challenges by providing immediate assistance and long-term support programs tailored specifically for homeless youth. Their dedicated staff members work tirelessly to ensure that every young person who walks through their doors receives the care they deserve.

Closing down DI at OneRoof would have devastating consequences on our community's most vulnerable members. Without access to shelter and basic necessities like food and clothing, these young individuals will be left exposed to extreme weather conditions which can lead to serious health risks or even death.

Moreover, studies have shown that investing in programs like DI at OneRoof not only saves lives but also benefits society as a whole. A study conducted by The Canadian Observatory on Homelessness (2017) found that every dollar invested in homelessness prevention can save up to $2.17 in social costs, including healthcare and criminal justice expenses.

We cannot turn a blind eye to the struggles faced by homeless youth in our community. By signing this petition, you are joining me in urging the authorities to prioritize funding for DI at OneRoof Youth Shelter and ensure that it remains open. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of these young individuals who deserve a chance at a brighter future.

Please sign this petition and help us keep DI at OneRoof Youth Shelter open so that homeless youth aged 12-25 can receive the proper help they need, access essential resources, and have a safe place to stay during challenging times.

Thank you for your support.
