SAVE DEEPING ST JAMES – DEEPING GATE BRIDGE

The Issue

This bridge is a historic, Grade II* listed stone packhorse bridge spanning the River Welland between Deeping St James and Deeping Gate.

Built in 1651 the bridge features three narrow round arches and refuge ledges, originally designed for horse-drawn carts during the 17th-century.

It is of historical importance as it was historically connected to the Stamford Canal

The Bridge is being used repeatedly by large overweight vehicles which cause damage to the bridge and are over the legal weight limit for the historically protected area in Deeping St James. These vehicles should not be using the bridge, and the repeated damage  is an unnecessary drain on public finances, and creates unnecessary extra work.

We, the undersigned,  would like the road signage improved to be clearer and more visible. We would also like extra measures taken to stop these vehicles before any permanent damage occurs eg width restriction and or height restriction.

We, the undersigned, call upon Peterborough City Council, Lincolnshire County Council, Deeping St James Parish Council and Deeping Gate Parish Council to co-operate to protect this important landmark from further damage.
