Dave, the always cheerful Cirencester Argos car park man, is facing redundancy after 15 years of dedicated service in favour of electronic fines and cameras. Although Dave is employed by Euro Car Parks, the decision came from Sainsbury’s who own Argos. This means replacing a helpful, friendly face who knows his community by name, with impersonal technology. Dave is not just an employee; he's a beacon of positivity and assistance for everyone visiting the store.

For years, Dave has brightened the trips to Argos for countless customers. His dedication goes beyond his job description — he has helped carry heavy and awkward items, always offering a big smile no matter the weather conditions. His kindness to all, the elderly, those with disabilities, families, show that Dave has represented the very best of public spirited service that simply cannot be replicated by machines.

Replacing Dave with automated systems strips this car park of its personal touch, jeopardising the unique customer experience that has made our local Argos store feel welcoming and familiar to many. While technology undoubtedly has its benefits, it should enhance, not replace, the human touch that Dave so exemplifies.

We urge Sainsbury’s to reconsider this decision. Rather than eliminating a valued team member, they should seek to integrate the invaluable human service that Dave provides. By doing so, Argos, and Sainsbury’s, can stand as a model for prioritising personal service over profit.

I put a post on our local Facebook page about this, and the love, respect, and thanks shown for Dave was magical. From minding a baby while his mother nipped into Argos, to helping another mother who’s sleeping toddler was in the car and she had accidentally locked her keys in; to helping the less able bodied in and out of their cars, goes way beyond his job role, and shows why he is so special to all of us in Cirencester.

Please help us show Sainsbury’s how much we appreciate Dave's contribution and we would love them to reverse their decision so he can retain his role. Dave is so much more than just a car park man, he’s a legend.
