Save Danial: Grant Asylum to a Persecuted Christian Convert

The Issue

My name is Danial Muhammad, and I need your help to escape the life-threatening danger I face due to my conversion from Islam to Orthodox Christianity. Born in Pakistan, I was forced to flee after sharing cartoon images of the Prophet Muhammad, an act considered blasphemous, which, combined with my conversion, carries the death penalty in my home country.

I found refuge in Cyprus, where I was baptized by Father Marios, and for the first time, I experienced the peace and freedom to follow my faith. Cyprus is a kind and hospitable country with a long and proud history of protecting Orthodox Christians. During the Byzantine era and through centuries of Ottoman rule, Cyprus stood as a beacon of hope for Christians, offering sanctuary and maintaining its deep connection to Orthodox Christianity. Even in times of adversity, the people of Cyprus have been known for their hospitality and defense of their religious heritage.

However, despite Cyprus’ compassion, my asylum application has been rejected, and I now face the terrifying possibility of being deported back to Pakistan, where my life would be in imminent danger.

The asylum process has been deeply traumatic. I endured humiliation during my interview, which left me with lasting emotional scars and symptoms of PTSD. The constant uncertainty of my situation has taken a severe toll on my mental health, leading to anxiety and depression. Every day, I live in fear of what the future holds, not knowing if I will be forced back to a country where I could be killed for my beliefs.

In Pakistan, blasphemy laws continue to pose a severe threat to anyone accused, often leading to violent mobs and extrajudicial killings. Recent attacks highlight the growing danger. For example, in August 2023, a Christian community in Jaranwala was brutally attacked, with churches burned and homes destroyed, following accusations of blasphemy. This hostility is a constant threat for anyone who is accused, and I fear I would face the same fate if I were sent back.

In my quest for safety, I have reached out to every major organization, including the UNHCR, the Red Cross, and others, but none have been able to offer assistance. Each time, I received the same heartbreaking response—that they could not do anything to help my situation. Despite these setbacks, I continue to fight for my right to live freely as a Christian.

Why This Matters:

In Pakistan, blasphemy laws and apostasy are punishable by death. If I am deported, I face not just persecution but execution.

As a newly baptized Christian, my freedom to practice my faith is a fundamental human right that must be protected.

Cyprus has a long history of protecting Orthodox Christians and offering sanctuary to those in need. I need help now to secure my safety.

Despite my efforts to seek assistance from international organizations, I have been met with silence and inaction.

The mental toll of this uncertainty has led to severe emotional distress, including PTSD, anxiety, and depression.

I have sacrificed everything—family, friends, and even my homeland—for my beliefs. I stand alone but steadfast in my faith, trusting in God’s will. Please help me in this fight for survival.

What You Can Do:

Sign this petition to urge the Cypriot authorities and the global human rights community to grant me asylum.

Thank you for standing with me in faith, hope, and love. Every signature brings me closer to safety.
