Save CVHS Tennis Courts
Save CVHS Tennis Courts
The Issue
To the Castro Valley Unified School District Board of Trustees:
We, the undersigned students, athletes, families, and community members of Castro Valley High School (CVHS), write to express our strong support for both the arts and our athletic programs. While we welcome the potential investment in a new art center at our school if Measure B passes, we are deeply concerned about the current plan to construct it directly on top of the CVHS tennis courts.
We urgently request that the Board commit to preserving the existing tennis courts and exploring alternative locations on campus for the proposed art center.
Why This Matters to Our School and Community:
- Protecting Student Athletes: The CVHS tennis courts are the home of our hard-working Trojan tennis teams. Eliminating these courts disrupts our training, compromises our ability to host home league matches, and directly hurts a thriving, inclusive sports program that serves dozens of students each year.
- Learning from the Past (The Canyon Middle School Precedent): We have already seen the devastating impact of losing athletic facilities in our district. When the tennis courts at Canyon Middle School were converted into a parking lot, it completely eliminated their tennis program. We cannot allow history to repeat itself at the high school level; our student-athletes deserve protected spaces to play.
- A Hub for the Castro Valley Community: Outside of school hours, these courts are a vital recreational space for Castro Valley residents of all ages to stay active, practice, and connect.
- We Can Have Both: Believing in the arts shouldn't mean sacrificing youth sports. With strategic planning, the District can find an alternative site on campus or within District property that allows the art center to flourish without dismantling our essential athletic infrastructure.
Our Request:
By signing this petition, we urge the Board of Trustees to work collaboratively with CVHS administration, athletic directors, and community planners to relocate the proposed art center to an alternative site that leaves our tennis courts intact. Let’s invest in our future without cutting corners on our student athletes.
