Save Creston's New Horizon's Senior Society Home of 45 Years

Save Creston's New Horizon's Senior Society Home of 45 Years
The Issue
The Regional District of Central Kootenay (RDCK) Board of Directors plans to evict New Horizons Seniors Society (https://crestonnewhorizons.ca/ ) from Rotacrest and repurpose this purpose-built community facility for staff offices. For 45 years this has been home to New Horizon's Senior Society -- a vital hub for Creston’s seniors, fostering health, connection, and purpose.
This decision was made without any consultation with New Horizon’s or the affected community. We call for a fair process and the preservation of its community use.
Why This Matters
Essential for Seniors:
Rotacrest hosts over 900 monthly visits for accessible activities like Motion Therapy, Bridge, and dances, promoting physical and mental health for 190+ members and drop-ins.
Purpose-Built Accessibility:
Its stair-free, quiet, single-room design is ideal for seniors with mobility or hearing or other age related challenges, unlike the recreation center’s stairs, echoes, windowless and complex layout.
Community Legacy:
Donated by the Creston Rotary under a “preferred client” agreement for public events, repurposing it betrays that trust and wastes a high-value, low-cost facility.
Financial Sense:
Converting Rotacrest and retrofitting elsewhere is costly, likely raising event fees beyond $2–$3, burdening fixed-income seniors and taxpayers.
Growing Need: Post-COVID participation has surged, with plans for new programs like tech workshops, proving Rotacrest’s ongoing relevance.
Call to Action
We demand the RDCK:
- Pause the office conversion plan and consult with the community.
- Share the RDCK study and cost analyses publicly.
- Commit to keeping Rotacrest for community use, as intended.
