Save the African American Burial Ground for the Enslaved at Cool Springs

The Issue

As Loudoun continues to grow at a record pace historic preservation inequality is quickly becoming one of the key Civil Rights issues of our county and the nation! Our Ancestors voices are crying out for our help from the landscape across the length and breadth of this great nation. Here’s what you can do to help save the final resting places of the enslaved at Cool Springs from demolition and desecration, and preserved them into perpetuity in Loudoun!

Sign this petition and join the Loudoun Freedom Center, Pastor Michelle C. Thomas, and concerned citizens of Loudoun County in stopping Peterson Companies (developers of Compass Creek) from destroying and desecrating Loudoun County's Most Endangered African American history and sacred burial grounds. Sign this petition today and tell Peterson Company and Thunderbird Archaeology disinterment is not an option! #WeShallNotBeRemoved

Background:
On March 19, 2018, Cool Springs stakeholders, the descendant community and concerned citizens of Loudoun County, met with the developers of Compass Creek. After hearing the insufficient historical & archaeological evidence of Thunderbird Archaeology, and the inconclusive development plans of Peterson Companies, we are vehemently opposed to the continuation of this Compass Creek development project in Cool Springs. We respectfully request that Peterson Companies halt any and all court filings related to the disinterment and the removal of the deeded reservation for the Cool Springs Burial Ground, following a second opinion and archaeological survey done by Dr. Michael Blakey. Dr. Blakey is the Director of the Institute for Historical Biology at the College of William and Mary. He is a physical anthropologist known for analysis and interpretation of the important evidence uncovered at the 1991 African Burial Ground in Manhattan
