Save Coney Island! Everyone Deserves to Eat Healthy! Fund Farm Markets/Edible Gardens
The Issue
Everybody thinks Coney Island is a paradise of Wonder Wheels, the Cyclone, the boardwalk - a place of joy and fun.
But beyond the beach, thousands of residents - most of them people of color - live in poverty, with chronic lack of access to nearby, affordable fresh fruits and vegetables. This food injustice means our neighbors have disproportiontely high rates of diabetes, heart disease, obesity and all the related ailments that come with this terrible preventable diseases.
So, why doesn't Coney Island have farmers markets and healthy cafes?
Coney Island residents have had enough. We need to create our own healthy choices - to create a healthy Coney Island to live and learn.
Everyone deserves affordable nearby fresh fruits and vegetables and nutritious food. Seeds in the Middle markets give free $2 Health Bucks for every $2 spent with EBT/SNAP up to $10 a day ($20 value). Seeds in the Middle also gives FREE $5 Hip2B Healthy Coupons when people spend $10 at their markets. They also offer free produce to those in need.
Seeds in the Middle also educates youth about how to run markets and be healthy and helps community residents themselves to create healthy business so they can sustain healthy lives.
Gravesend Houses wants to grow edible gardens on its lawns and run a farm market. So do other NYCHA residents.
Please sign and support Food Justice and Equity. Empower Coney Island to to be healthy and get healthy choices near where we live.
Healthy eating is a civil right.
Elected officials and foundations, please fund Seeds in the Middle's requests so they can help us help ourselves and build our community of wellness.
