Save Community Center Park in Garden Grove: Home to a Black Crowned Night Heron Colony
The Issue
Update: Planning Commission voted to demolish the park.
SAVE COMMUNITY CENTER PARK IN GARDEN GROVE, CA
Our local government wants to destroy this lovely park, the only park in Garden Grove with a pond, to create a new Police HQ building.
Help save this park & save the habitat it has created for local birds!

It seems as though not many residents are aware of a beautiful neighbor we have right here in our backyard. The Black Crowned Night Heron species.
This beautiful species of bird has had a decreasing population since the year 1966.
Black Crowned Night Herons are known to make shallow open water sites their homes.
As these birds when living in California are known to be a residential species, they do not migrate through the seasons. They find a place to call home & can live there for up to 20 years. They play a vital role to our local ecosystem & this pond plays a vital role to their quality of life. This species is high on the food chain & their colonial/residential nesting habits prove to be a good indicator of the environmental quality of an area. So to displace them with demolishing this pond site, constructing new buildings & a new park could damage our local ecosystem and make for a vulnerable environment for wildlife that still resides within our city.
At the very least, I request an environmental impact assessment from a third party to determine the likelihood of devastation to our local birds. What would please me most, and many other concerned citizens, would be to halt the plans to destroy this pond and park.
Many Garden Grove residents hold fond memories in this park & our wildlife residents do as well. Every year for Prom season, hundreds of our Local High School students use this park for photos to keep for their whole life. Sports teams, dance teams, debate clubs, etc have made this park THE spot for local photo shoots. This is the park to take a rest at after being involved in the Strawberry Festival Parade. It's always been connected with the Strawberry Festival. A quaint spot to watch the hustle and bustle of the festival with a little less commotion.
I've been watching this small Heron population grow immensely in the last year & just when growth for this species is taking flight in our small town, it would be cruel and unethical to displace them. It would be inhumane to halt their ability to reproduce & regenerate a species that could be nearing the end.
Do we want to be responsible for destroying the chances for our city to be home to a beautiful elusive pecies to thrive? Or would you like Garden Grove to be known as a city where an environment of growth & healing can be done for humans & animals alike? The Black Crowned Night Herons that are hunting for food just next door to us now, hope that you choose to allow them to heal here.
ACT NOW, MAKE YOURSELF BE HEARD!
