The Issue

St Benedict's Church in Manchester has been a cherished haven for the climbing community for 20 years. For many, climbing these historic walls is more than just a sport – it's a vital part of their mental and physical well-being, a place where friendships are forged, and a community thrives. It's a space that brings people together regardless of age, background, or ability.

The proposal to close and sell this beloved climbing venue has sparked widespread dismay among climbers and locals alike.  Such a decision would threaten not only the availability of the sport in central Manchester but also the rich sense of community and heritage that has developed around it.

Tens of thousands of climbing visits occur each year at St Benedict's Church, contributing significantly to the local economy and culturally enriching Manchester's vibrant outdoor activities.

In recent years, Manchester's community spaces have become increasingly hollowed-out by the development of yet more luxury flats, big chains, and shopping centres. Saving climbing at St Benedict's Church would therefore not simply benefit the climbing community but would maintain the distinctiveness of the historic, Grade II listed building, and secure access to it for the wider community. This is especially important since the original development of the church into a climbing centre was facilitated by taxpayer money: An £80,000 grant from Manchester City Council and English Heritage.

We therefore call on John Dunne and the Parthian Board to reconsider. Ideally, they would continue operations in Manchester and invest the money needed to make the climbing centre an ongoing success. Failing that, we ask that they restrict the sale of the site to an individual or organisation that will take St Benedict's Church forward as a climbing centre.

We understand that the proposals to close Parthian Climbing Manchester are not taken lightly and that a series of commercial challenges have made the sale of the site seem the most viable option. However, we urge management to reconsider the closure and work towards a solution that supports the climbing community while safeguarding the historical and architectural significance of the church.

Join us in urging Parthian Climbing LTD to foster a future where climbing and heritage coexist harmoniously. Sign this petition to show your support for preserving climbing access at St Benedict's Church in Manchester.
