Save CIS at LOA
The Issue
Community In Schools (CIS) is an essential part of what makes Live Oak Academy successful for the students we serve. As an alternative, accelerated high school, many of our students arrive already at risk of dropping out, often facing significant challenges outside of school. CIS provides critical, individualized support that addresses not just academic needs, but also the personal and social barriers that can prevent students from reaching graduation. For many of our students, this is support they do not receive anywhere else.
Removing the CIS position would have a direct and lasting impact on our most vulnerable students. CIS helps connect students to resources, builds meaningful relationships, and creates a sense of stability and trust that keeps them engaged in school. At Live Oak, success is not just measured by credits earned, but by lives changed—and CIS is a key part of making that possible. We strongly urge the district to protect this position so that our students continue to have the support they need to succeed and graduate.
Others should join this campaign because supporting CIS means standing up for students who are often overlooked but deserve every opportunity to succeed. At Live Oak Academy, many of our students face real-life challenges that go far beyond the classroom, and CIS is often the consistent support system helping them stay on track. It’s more than a program—it’s a lifeline for students who need someone in their corner, offering guidance, resources, and encouragement when they need it most.
Live Oak was recognized for the first-ever CIS Champion of the Year award in February 2026. This honor was given to Doug Agnew for his close collaboration with our CIS Program Manager, Grace Gellerup. Together, they have created an environment for students to feel safe, heard, and important. Grace goes above and beyond when it comes to advocating for students and building trust.
When we invest in CIS, we’re not just helping individual students—we’re strengthening our entire community. We are giving students a real chance to overcome obstacles, stay in school, and reach graduation. Without this support, many could fall through the cracks. Joining this means standing up for equitable support and making sure every student has the opportunity to succeed, no matter their circumstances.
