Petition updateSave Chamberlain ParkOver One thousand one hundred Trees to be Eliminated

Shockingly, over 1100 trees will be lost to Auckland if the Albert Eden Local Board proceeds with their Master Plan for Chamberlain Park. Save Chamberlain Park Inc undertook a quick count of the existing trees over 3-4 metres high on Chamberlain Park golf course. We counted over 1100 and this excludes smaller shrubs and newly planted trees. Stage one of the Master Plan will involve re configuring the western end of the course. The three new holes will be at 90 degrees to the current holes, so all the current fairway trees will initially need to be eliminated to reconfigure 3 holes. The AELB are currently trying to apply for resource consent for stage one of the plan and for it to be (undemocratically) Non-Notifiable! Under the proposed final stage (sketch attached from google maps showing trees removed in green), it appears ALL trees in the inner golf course area will need to be removed to allow for the two sports fields, car parking, aquatic centre and driving range. Note: all of the proposed tree work is a "restricted discretionary activity". The criteria that Council has to use for assessing the application are included in the Unitary Plan chapter on Trees in Open Space. There are 11 criteria. Council's compliance with many of the criteria should be challenged. For example, "(d) any alternative methods that could result in retaining the tree or trees;" The alternative is; not doing any of the work, retaining all the trees where they are, planting more trees if needed, and building the playground in Rawalpindi Reserve which is encircled by residential streets, not out in an isolated at the end of a dead end road!
