Carson found himself on the brink, a soul yearning for safety, just rescued in time from the darkness of uncertainty. He was taken home with a heart full of hope but, overwhelmed by fear, he nipped his new mom. It was not a vicious attack but a nervous response to a daunting experience — entering a car, an entirely new environment for him. This heartbreaking scenario isn't just about Carson; it highlights a systemic issue within California's shelter system. Shelters, envisioned as safe havens, should foster life, not fear. Yet, every year in California, around 110,000 dogs are euthanized, according to the ASPCA. We can and must do better.

It’s time we shift our focus from euthanasia to rehabilitation and adoption, providing these animals with the loving second chances they deserve. Achieving a save rate of 90% or higher is not just aspirational; it’s attainable. Many counties across the U.S. have already demonstrated the success of this paradigm shift by implementing effective spay/neuter programs, comprehensive adoption initiatives, and enhanced foster care systems.
