Save Our Park
May 31, 2017
Tunbridge Wells Borough Council opened a six-week public consultation on 20 April. There are many flaws with what we've been presented with and many significant omissions (as you'd probably expect!). This makes it all the more important that we submit a response to the consultation. You can do so here:
http://consult.tunbridgewells.gov.uk/portal/economic_development__regeneration/civic_complex/civic_complex
There are five areas to respond to. If you're not sure on what to say then have a look at the other submissions for reference. We recommend compiling your answers in word and then copying and pasting. That way you'll avoid timing out and losing all your comments.
Some of the many omisssions are:
1) Cost - there is nothing on how much it'll cost (minimum £72m), how this will be paid for and whether your taxes will be increased, services cut, or both! Then again, without a business plan how would the council know?!
2) Impact on the park - hidden in the appendix to the stage 2 documents (no longer available on the council's website) is that the park cafe will probably close (to reduce competition with the new theatre cafe). The public consultation also omits any illustrations and gives no idea of whether the toilets will be replaced, the size of shadows cast, etc.
3) Theatre size - all along we've been told that in order to attract the top touring shows the theatre MUST have 1.200 seats. The consultation document tells us this is what will be delivered. Yet, deep in the stage 2 appendices it turns out there will only be 1,100 seats when the orchestra is in place!
Why is the council hiding so much information? We can do more than just wonder. We can fill out the consultation to demand that these significant details are released and we can share our petition to show the council the full weight of opposition to the plans. Please do.
Reminder: the consultation closes tomorrow, Thursday 1 June at 5pm.
