Save Our Park
May 17, 2017
Tunbridge Wells Borough Council opened a six-week public consultation on 20 April to allow us, the town's tax and rate payers, to have a say on the civic complex. This might be our one and only chance to have our voices heard. Please make sure you read the documents and let the council know how you feel. The documents are here: http://consult.tunbridgewells.gov.uk/portal/economic_development__regeneration/civic_complex/civic_complex?pointId=1491916662962 Unfortunately the council is being shy with the details. We wonder why? Here are some of the (many) crucial aspects that are omitted: 1) Cost (!!) - not only is the total cost left out (latest figures from Feb's full council suggest at least £72m), but so too is the impact on the deficit and which services will be cut and taxes raised to pay for it. One reason they haven't included this information is that there is no business plan (!!!) so they can't even tell us how much of a loss it'll make each year. 2) Impact on Calverley Grounds - there are no illustrations or elevations of the proposed buildings, or how much of the park will be taken up by the office footprint. The council also left out details on the number of trees to be taken away (last we heard it was all those on the western boundary!), that the cherished park cafe will probably close for good (so that the theatre cafe can dominate!) and the main entrance will be closed for the 4-5 years of construction. 3) Lost car parking - the AXA and Great Hall car parks will be closed during construction, meaning local businesses will have to survive without 300 spaces for the duration of construction. We'll also see all the extra cars trying to squeeze on to residential roads adding to residents' parking nightmares and increasing congestion. If you agree with us that these are material matters that should be included in the public consultation then please let the council know. You have until 1 June to respond. And then please share our petition with everyone you know so that we can demonstrate the full weight of opposition to the council's ill-conceived scheme.
