Petition updateSave Tunbridge Wells from the council's £70m civic complex before it's too lateCouncil opens public consultation - omits details on crucial aspects of the plan
Save Our Park
May 9, 2017
TWBC opened a six-week consultation period on the £70m civic complex on 20 April (see here: http://consult.tunbridgewells.gov.uk/portal/economic_development__regeneration/civic_complex/civic_complex?pointId=1491916662962). This is our one time to have a proper say on the future of our town. We were hoping the council would provide clarity on the cost and how this would be funded, the impact on the park, whether there are tenants lined up for the existing site and the duration of lost car parking during construction. It lacks all of these details. We have to ask, "Why?". Please share our petition to force the council to hold a full debate on the project. As a reminder of why this is important: - Cost of £70m+ - in Februrary's full council meeting it was revealed that the council will borrow £72m to fund the project. This commits us as TW residents to a bill of at least £2.4m per annum to pay back the interest! What the council didn't discuss in this meeting, or include in the public consultation document is how this is to be paid for. When the CCTV live monitoring is switched off to save £100k, how is the council to find £2.4m+? - No tenants are lined up to fill the existing Assembly Hall and town hall site. There are also no takers for the excess space in the new council offices. Isn't it a bit risky to proceed without having someone agree to occupy these spaces? - No illustrations of the proposed buildings are included in the consultation document. There's no mention of how park users will be overlooked or how the buildings will cast shadows into the park. How are we supposed to assess the impact on our green spaces? - There are no timeframes for development, to include no detail on the duration of lost car parking during construction. The Great Hall and Mount Pleasant Avenue car parks will disappear during construction. It could be more than three years before a replacement is built under the new office block. How are local businesses to survive? Why is there no mention of this in the document? Please sign and share our petition so that we can force the council to address these widespread concerns.
