The Issue

Growing up in Seattle, a place known for its love of outdoor sports and vibrant culture, I was introduced to the world of skateboarding at a young age. I found my community at the Cal Anderson skate park. It's a vital hub for skaters of all ages, offering a safe space to hone skills, connect with others, and express creativity in a positive environment.

The Cal Anderson skate park has been an iconic spot in Seattle where countless memories and friendships were born. It's more than just concrete and metal; it is where the skateboarding community thrives, bringing together diverse individuals united by their passion for skating. However, this cherished community space is under threat of being transformed into a pickleball court, which could significantly impact those who rely on it as a sanctuary.

While pickleball is a growing sport with its merits, Seattle already boasts numerous pickleball facilities, such as the courts at Green Lake and several recreation centers. In contrast, there are few places like Cal Anderson skate park where skaters can gather. Removing this vital skateboarding venue will limit opportunities for both young and veteran skaters to engage in physical activity, broaden their community networks, and nurture their passion for skateboarding. Skating isn’t just a pastime; it’s a lifestyle that helps curb juvenile delinquency by offering a constructive outlet for energy and creativity.

Instead of converting Cal Anderson skate park into another sporting venue, let's work together to preserve this unique space dedicated to skateboarders. By exploring alternative locations or unused areas for pickleball courts, we can ensure that both communities have resources to enjoy their sports fully without sacrificing one for the other.

Join me in preserving the heart of our skateboarding community. Let’s save Cal Anderson skate park for future generations of skaters. Please sign this petition to help protect a place filled with history and community vibrancy.
