Save Buxton Town Hall – A Landmark Worth Protecting

Buxton Town Hall is more than just a building — it’s a symbol of our town’s identity, history, and civic pride. For generations, it has stood at the heart of our community, hosting public services, local decision-making, and countless moments that have shaped Buxton into the place we know today.

In 1885, Buxton's Market Hall was destroyed by fire. The town siezed the opportunity to build a new municipal hub - something truly magnificent! In 1886, a design competition was held and won by William Pollard, and the newly constructed building, at a cost to the public of over £8,000, flung open its doors in 1889.

From the outset, the building was designed as a civic centre for the people of Buxton. A shared public building, and the beating heart of the town, it housed administrative functions, public meeting spaces, a beautiful ballroom, and the town's first public library.

Buxton Town Hall wasn’t handed to the town by a benefactor — it was built by the town, for the town.

This, arguably, makes its public value even stronger: it’s not a private gift, it’s a civic institution created to serve generations of residents and

now, this historic landmark is at risk of being sold. If this happens, we could lose not only an important piece of our heritage, but also a vital public asset that belongs to the people of Buxton.

Once sold, there is no guarantee it will remain accessible to the community, preserved with care, or used in a way that reflects its significance. Decisions made now will have lasting consequences for future generations.
We believe there is a better way.

We call on High Peak Borough Council to withdraw Buxton Town Hall from sale and work with residents, local groups, and stakeholders to explore sustainable, community-focused alternatives that protect its legacy while securing its future.

This is our chance to stand together and make our voices heard. If Buxton Town Hall matters to you — for its history, its role, or its meaning to our town — please sign this petition and help protect it.

Don’t let Buxton lose a piece of its heart. Sign today.
