SAVE BURNABY's HISTORIC CHURCH

The Issue

The unique Edmonds Baptist Church, known locally as the Walker Ave Church and proudly serving Burnaby's oldest neighbourhood since 1912, is under threat of development.  This beautifully designed Arts and Crafts landmark features a textural mix of finishes including lapped siding and stucco, and half timbering in the gables. It remains in nearly all original condition, retaining it's original doors, windows, siding and style and is the best example of it's kind in the lower mainland.  The architects were J.P. Matheson and Son of Vancouver, and the contractors were Muttitt and Bell of New Westminster.  the property's density development is being considered and could be put into action by late 2025, replacing this rare and beautiful historical building and it's adjoining vacant lot with a 45 story, 430 unit tower.  Even though this heritage building is recognized on Burnaby paper, it unfortunately has no legal protection.

While more housing is most certainly needed, it need not come at the expense of our built cultural heritage, which in this highly progressive city is constantly under threat and ever diminishing.  This petition requests all avenues of heritage preservation be genuinely considered, including any posibility of relocation.  Inclusion of this church within a new development by demolishing all additions, moving the original 1912 structure to the corner of the property and building around it is certainly preferred.

I WILL NEVER ASK FOR MONEY - THE BELOW REQUEST FOR DONATIONS IS IN NO WAY AFFILIATED WITH PETITION.

People of Burnaby... do NOT let this piece of local history be erased!
