The Issue

This charming architectural gem is an important Carpenter Gothic structure built in the 1870s by the skilled hands of the emancipated people who made this church their home.

Recognizing the immense architectural and cultural significance of Brevard’s Chapel, the property owner, United Methodist Church (UMC) has agreed to allow time for a preservation plan to be created by the collaborative efforts of the preservation groups listed below.

The new proposal would achieve the best of both worlds by mixing plans for new and old to achieve all parties’ goals for this important historic site. We are appreciative to UMC for their desire to be part of the solution to save this important historic artifact.

HEARTS is an umbrella organization designed to help with all aspects of historic preservation from site development, working with new construction, advising on historic restoration, artifact and history management, community engagement, and future sustainability.

HEARTS is working with the following organizations to facilitate a preservation solution for Brevard’s Chapel and welcomes other groups and community members for their support.

Lincoln Landmarks
Lincoln County Historical Association
Preservation North Carolina
Preserve Mecklenburg
